I just checked the settings on my facebook account. I am set to private but I was also allowing friends of friendss to see my posts.
i am very careful about the few posts I do make so it wasn't a huge deal. I did change it to just friends though in order to feel safer about complete strangers seeing photos of my children.
Like many others in this forum I do not accept requests from strangers or students. Sometimes I think it is best to have seperation between my career and my homelife.
