Art Concepts and Terminology

Haley VanBlaricome
What was new learning for you?
One new thing I learned was about the meaning of different lines. I didn't realize how horizontal, diagonal, straight, and curved lines could have such different meanings. After looking at the pictures shown with each type of line I understood the definition better.

What was a review?
The shapes were a review for me. I teach 2nd grade and we spend a month talking about shapes.

How can you apply these concepts to a content area you currently teach?
During my unit on shapes I would like to use the word uniform for geometric shape because that is a word 2nd grade students wouldn't normally use. In my classroom we do guided drawings so I think it could be useful to discuss the foreground, middle ground, and background especially since this is discussed in art class and I can continue to show importance.

I think using the proper terms as we teach is very important.  I call them "Big Money Words".  Students think it's cool and we are extending their vocabulary outside their age and grade level.

I agree that taking the concepts and building from skills or vocabulary they know from reading and math to help students learn art terms.

I think that it is a great idea to integrate some of these art vocabulary words in the classroom.  I have been teaching 3rd grade for the last couple of years.  The word uniform is something that I could start using in the classroom.

I do not want to just echo others responses, but vocabulary it key and proper terminology.  I think that we sell students short when we avoid "big" words and stray away from proper vocabulary.  I make sure to do this in math and I see no reason why I cannot also use the same terms that they here in art class.

I agree with you all saying how important it is to use the correct( BIG) terms when teaching the students.  After going through these slides and then teaching art I have found it makes more sense to the students when you use the correct terms.
