Creative Art lesson – Robyn Davis

Collage self portraits

Grade level – 2nd grade (this could be used with almost any elementary grade.  I will be using it with 2nd graders)

Objective – Students will use the artwork found in books and website of Hanoch Piven to create their own self-portraits.

Art standards:
Creating - Students will: 1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. 2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. 3. Refine and complete artistic work.
Tie-in to Language Arts – reading

AASL standards – Inquire- Create – Learners will engage with new knowledge by following a process that includes – generating products that illustrate learning.
Explore- Create – Learners construct new knowledge by persisting through self-directed pursuits by tinkering and making.

Procedure:  Teacher will read the books My Dog is as Smelly as Stinky Socks  and My Friend is as Sharp as a Pencil .  Teacher will discuss the use of the items the artist used to create the portraits of family members.  Teacher will also share portraits on the artist’s website:  http://www.pivenworld.com/hanoch-piven-illustrations/world-leaders/4
She will lead a discussion of those that the students recognize and WHY the artist chose to use certain materials to create the portraits.  They will also discuss various facial features (eyes, hair, mouth, nose) and how those might be portrayed (open/closed mouth, hair, etc)
Teacher will then give students a variety of materials to create their own self-portraits.  Students will glue materials on foam/particle board to create self-portraits.

Closure: As time allows, students will share self-portraits and elaborate on choice of materials.
