Creativity lesson by Allison Van Aartsen

Subject focus: This is a lesson integrating ELA and art.
Grade level: 2-3 grade
Background: This lesson is part of a unit on fairy tales. This lesson follows lessons discussing elements of fairy tales and various fairy tale stories.

Anchor Standard #1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard #2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard #3: Refine and complete artistic work.

Students will be shown the painting, Bridge of Dreams. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/bridge-of-dreams-jane-small.html

Teacher will say, "We've been learning about fairy tales. I want you take a moment to look at this painting with me." Teacher and class will have a VTS discussion about the painting.

Students will be asked to create their own fairy tale based on the Bridge painting. The bridge must be part of their story in some way. They can also include other elements from the painting into their story. They will need to also create their own artwork to go along with their fairy tale.

Assessment: Students will be assessed according to the following rubric.

5 points - Effort and creativity in writing
5 points - Bridge painting details incorporated into fairy tale.
5 points - Effort and creativity in their artwork
15 points total

Completed student work will be displayed in classroom library. Students will be encouraged to read their classmates finished fairy tales.
