D.C. Into: Norms and responsibilities

Betty Lowe
I believe it is very important that students are taught that they not only have the following rights to participate in the digital world but also the following very important responsibilities.

1. All students have the right to participate in the digital world.
2. They have the right to learn to use our ever advancing technology so they may access information for learning and knowledge.
3. They have the right to express themselves as long as it does not harm others.
4. They have the right to keep personal information safe.
5. They have the right to be treated with respect.

Along with the rights that students have in the digital world, they must be taught that there are very serious personal responsibilities.

1. They have the responsibility to keep their personal information safe as well as the personal information of others safe. They must be taught the dangers of not doing so.
2. They have the responsibility to always check and recheck for the credibility of the information that exists on the internet before accepting it as part of their knowledge base.
3. They have the responsibility to not plagiarize the information they find for their own purposes or to falsify any information they place on the internet for their own purposes.
4. They have the responsibility to understand that any information placed on the internet is permanent.
5. They have the responsibility to treat others with respect.
