DC Internet Safety

Rebecca Barnes
What social networking site did you explore and what settings in that site should users be aware? Explore other participants thoughts to see if any of them apply to any social networking sites you or your students may be using.

I chose to explore Facebook.  I've had it since you had to have a college email address to sign-up!  I've had it for so long that I forget to check the security features as FB is continually changing.  I'm was very surprised to see how many different components of a FB page have different privacy settings.  Some I didn't even understand why someone would set their pages to private, but still maintain a page.  I believe, following their recent security breach in the news, Facebook has really been working to improve it's settings, including privacy.  I also found it interesting to see that I could create a "Custom" group within my account.  So, let's say I have my grandma on my page and I don't want her to see certain posts I can customize that.  It does take some time though!  Or the feature that I found that I really like is approving a post that I'm tagged in before it's made public to my page!  So if someone randomly tags me in a picture I don't want to be tagged in or shares something to my page I don't want to be connected to, I can approve or deny that tag.  I honestly believe I could spend an entire day or two just having students explore their social media security/privacy settings!
