DC Internet Safety

J. Orr
I checked out Snapchat since this is a popular social media outlet of teenagers. It looks like a good way for students to communicate, put they need to be careful when dealing with their privacy settings. It appears that post can only be viewed once unless they are screen shot and Snapchat stories go away after 24 hours. When you first download the app it automatically is set to private, however this setting can be change if the app is set to automatically update. A user should check their settings regularly to verify if they are posting privately or publicly. It is also important if a student changes their posts for some situations to public that they remember to set it back to private. One privacy issue I found was that the site seems to funnel you into allowing Snap Map (Geo Map). When this is on, friends can swipe to see your location. If account is set to public, anyone can swipe to see your location without asking. When using Snapchat story, it can be set to post to friends, public, or custom.  I can see this could be a place where student change their settings and forget who they are sending their post too.  Custom allows the user to post to just specific friends, however teens seem to change their friends and this could become a privacy issue if friendships fall apart. It is so important that student are aware of their settings and check them regularly to minimize letting too much private information be posted on social media.

Thanks for such a detailed account of the settings and risks with SnapChat.  I didn't know too much about that app.
