DC Internet Safety

Christine Skog
On Facebook, I had previously set up privacy settings to only "Friends." However, this was not the case when I checked today. I had no idea that I had to constantly check the settings with social media. This was eye opening to me. I quickly changed things to private, especially phone and email contact. I don't feel comfortable with students or unknown people "friending" me, so I am always sure to review these before accepting any new requests. I also keep my friends list small because I don't want my information put out to thousands of people.

I also have a blog, but this is somewhat open. I communicate with other music teachers and share information this way. However, I do review all comments and posts before sharing them on the blog. This is a way of moderating what is put out there to those that view it. As it is an educational blog, I never post addresses or phone numbers, as well as closer locations to protect my district, building and students. I also do not release my name or phone number, but act under a brand name. While these are not the most protective measures, I chose to put myself out there with a blog. So far, I haven't had any problems. However, I will be continually checking the privacy and sharing settings to avoid the mistake of the Facebook experience above.
