DC Internet Safety

Allison Hicks-McCarville
I spent time navigating the security measures that Facebook has put into place.  I do not use Facebook to post many thought-provoking comments, but I do use it to share pictures of our family and happenings with school events and activities.  I am careful about the people that I am friends with on Facebook and everyone that is a friend is also someone I know face-to-face.  I do go through and edit my friends' list so that I do not have people on that list that I want seeing this information.

I went through the privacy settings of Facebook and made some personal changes to better protect myself.  I forget that my cell phone is linked to my Facebook profile, therefore I made changes in my setting to limit outside contact to this information.  It is important that individuals made sure to check their privacy setting frequently and be aware of who is on their friends list.  I know that many students add friends to their social media accounts that I do not know-- they operate under the theory that more friends is better for their popularity.  I think they believe they are too young to be the target of an identify thief, which is a misconception we need to make sure they understand is not true.
