DC Internet Safety

zarubac
The only social networking site I us is Facebook. I only use it as a way to keep in contact with family members and those are the only friend requests I have accepted. I assumed that it was secure. Wrong. I checked the default settings and all I kept seeing was "Everyone". I fixed that real quick. Then I got to thinking about something one of the other students said. I share stuff with my wife's family that live in town. Her sister is a teacher where I teach. It would not be completely impossible for one of my brothers to share something with me that goes to my wife as well who would then share it with her sister and would make its way back to me at school. It almost appears that there is no real safety. Once something is out there it is possible for it to wind up anywhere. The only solution is to make sure you know everyone in your circle of friends.  I was also struck by the idea of creating accounts on twitter, snapchat, etc. Not that I would ever use them, it would prevent anyone else from making an account on one of those sites using my information. Finally, the one thing I like about internet communication is that it allows you to pause and back up. If you say something in person there is no do[over. Online, you can re=write what you are going to say a dozen times before you hit send.
