DC Internet Safety

Amy Featherstone
I primarily use Facebook and I am pretty cautious when it comes to posting information. A couple of years ago I had a friend who would post tons of pictures of her and her friends. I started to become uncomfortable with her tagging me in these photos so I explored Facebook's privacy settings. I've now restricted my Facebook information to only friends. And now I review everything posted to my timeline.

Even though it sometimes takes some digging to find all of the privacy and security settings, it is well worth it if you want to have a voice about the information others can find out about you. I think many users assume their information is private and don't read the fine print. Then, they are shocked to find out what people know about them.

One surprise I found when looking at my Twitter account was the tweet location. I do not have this option selected, but I imagine many people do and it makes me so nervous for them. I can't imagine telling the whole world my exact location at any given moment because I know there are strangers who prey on this information.
