DC Intro: Norms & Responsibilities

Kelly Grandgenett
In the digital world, certain things should be norms.  Individuals should have a right to safety, privacy, and free speech.  Along with these rights, students (and all individuals) should be educated about their own responsibility in being a good digital citizen.  As with everything in life, thinking through cause and effect in advance can protect them.   Education should be provided on protecting ones own privacy, and being aware of their own responsibility in protecting the privacy of others.  Students should learn about keeping their own personal information safe to avoid identity theft and also about good manners and etiquette surrounding their activity online.   Students should learn about their own responsibilities in speaking freely to avoid unintended consequences and keeping their reputation in tact.  The social implications of their behavior online can have severe consequences.  It is essential to counsel and monitor students and their online activity.
