Part 1 Activating Background Knowledge
Discussion: “How many of you use plastic utensils? Straws? Plastic bags?” “What do you do when you are done using these items?” “Do you know what happens to these items after you throw them in the trash?”

Watch and discuss the following video

TED Talk for older students https://www.ted.com/talks/dianna_cohen_tough_truths_about_plastic_pollution

Discussion Questions
What did you learn about where plastic waste ends up?
Were you surprised by this information?
Now that you have this information, how do you feel about throwing away plastics everyday?
Do you think it’s important for other people to know these facts? Why?

Part 2 Poster Assignment and Planning
Tell Students: “Yesterday we discussed that we think it is important for people to know about plastic pollution in the ocean so we can start to fix the problem.” You are going to create an awareness poster about plastic pollution in the ocean. You will research a marine animal that is being affected by plastic pollution. Your poster must include an image of the animal, a statistic or fact about plastic pollution in the ocean, a slogan, and you must find a way to incorporate actual plastic products into your design. Here are some examples of artwork on the topic of plastic pollution.”

Show Images and discuss how each piece conveys a message about pollution
