Digital Etiquette

Kevin Lahndorf
I will start by letting you know that I "turn off" I know, crazy right, my phone each night. It is in use quite frequently during the work day so I feel that there is no reason to keep it on all night long. Someone once asked me, "What would happen if there was an emergency and someone needed to get in contact with you?" I replied what did they do before cell phones?

I am amazed at the number of people that don't speak to each other any more. Look around, on the street, in the car, at the movies, out at lunch, at ballgames, everywhere, even in the same living room, people converse through their phones and not face-to-face anymore. As a teacher, I hear students say that "mom wanted me for dinner last night so she texted me" What is happening to personal communication?

In different meetings I go to the biggest complaint or skill businesses are asking me to teach students for the work world is...Yep you guessed it, teach them to put down their phones while on the job! Knowing what is and when it is appropriate to be on your phone is something we need to address with our students because if we don't, it may just cost them their job.
