Digital Etiquette

I believe digital etiquette lots of times is lacking for students and I see it myself sometimes as I communicate with other educators as well.

I know it is easy to be very informal with emails and social media posts with other educators especially the more of a relationship you might have with them and feel comfortable with those other educators, which makes it important to think about before you send off any type of email or social media content.

Once again we run in to the situation of being a good role model for students and practice what we will try and teach them about digital etiquette. How to script a professional email to teachers, colleagues, friends, or professional acuintants. Students should learning how to positively and professionally  use social media to project being a healthy digital citizen.

I agree with you, Ben. It is very difficult to use digital etiquette all the time, but as teachers, we are the ones that need to focus on showing the students the correct way. There are so many things that need to be addressed in this specific topic; it is hard to understand when and when not to be crediting other users. It is important to really help the students understand the importance of thinking before posting or sending.

This is a chicken or egg first problem!

Did our society teach our kids to operate with less etiquette and the use of technology then expediated it. Or because it is not face to face communication that we think it does not need to be a formal style of communication.

I know that I am guilty of not using proper etiquette digitally. Maybe with employers really starting to accepted resumes, cover letters etc digitally things will change.
