Digital Etiquette

Kaitlyn Christensen
While student teaching, I found that many students did not understand the importance of citing sources and giving credit where it was due. Many students tried to paraphrase most of their information, but did not understand how much needed to be changed in order to avoid plagiarism. Some students thought they could change a few words, and it would be considered "their work." This was also included with their phones and other devices.

This was very frustrating for the teachers involved, along with the students. We went through proper citations and use of sources, but students could not see the importance of citing the information. Since students had 1:1 computers, it was easy for them to copy this information straight into their papers. They knew the digital media and information was right at their fingertips, so they wanted to take advantage of it.

One thing that I wish I would have done differently is to teach the skills needed to avoid plagiarism earlier in the semester before papers are written. This includes both writing forms of digital media, along with pictures and movies used. I need to find other examples to show students how inappropriate use of digital media can be harmful if not properly done. I am also hoping to incorporate this more at the middle school level.
