Digital Literacy: Share Resource

Daryl Heino
Being a relatively new part-time teacher, I have not had the time to incorporate web resources into my classrooms; however, I want to!  I teach a precalculus and a calculus class, and I don't think I saw a site that would work for those courses, but I am sure there are some.  One on the list that caught my eye was on graphing, https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx.  This site is most likely for younger math students who are just learning how to do graphs.  My classes use non-web-based graphing calculators that are allowed on standardized tests such as the ACT.  In fact, web-based technology is off limits because it is too easy to cheat with sites such as Wolfram Alpha.

Web-based technology surpasses graphing calculators in many ways, because web-based technology can be updated instantly, whereas a graphing calculator has built-in features that are part of its hardware.  Desmos is one such graphing program that, for many users, is easier to work with.  Some day soon, there may be changes in the educational testing laws that enable students to use a web-based program that they can test with without cheating.
