Financial Literacy Survival

Paul Boysen
I work part-time in a residential facility for adjudicated youth ages 12 - 18.  The curriculum has a course which attempts to teach basic financial literacy.  Whenever possible I use videos and computer generated lessons due to the lack of reading and math skills of the students.  One lesson is the use of a checkbook or debit card.  I use a paper and pencil approach and have the students do an actual checkbook ledger.  The students do entries with deposits, withdrawals and other normal checkbook functions.  While the students can watch a video about use of a checkbook, the "hands-on" approach seems to work the best for these students.
