Financial Literacy and its application to high school students

Patty Gibbs
I am a high school counselor and I work with grade levels 10-12. Financial literacy is definitely a content area in which high school students can greatly benefit. For 10th graders, financial literacy is key due to the desire to take driver's education and the desire to start working. These students would benefit from the knowledge of saving and banking as well as setting financial goals to buy a car and learn about insurance, car maintenance and gas money. For 11th and 12th graders, financial literacy is key due to the same reasons as well as the ideas of college and other post secondary goals. In going to college or a trade school, they should be well versed in knowing about loans, grants, scholarships and credit cards. Financial literacy will be very important to facilitate them in becoming independent and avoid getting into deep debt.
