Financial Literacy in Content Area

Greg McCann
I teach 9-12 Level I special education. I work with students on their IEP goals and prepare them for post-secondary living/learning/working skills. One of the skills I try focusing on is budgeting/money management. It is my hope these students will have a working knowledge of financial literacy when they graduate.

I have used Banzai to introduce budgeting. Students have, for the most part, enjoyed this lesson. However, the program is limited and I was hopeful that it would be more extensive in providing content I could expand upon. For example, a "mock life" program where students have a job, apartment/house, recurring bills, etc. I had tried to create such a program but coming up with options or variations that would provide a connection or meaning to students. I have found that when students have a connection to the lesson, they are more responsive to it. For example, a student interested in cars is more receptive to an auto mechanic job versus being a cook.

I am hopeful I will learn about more options or ideas I can use to help my students.
