Financial Literacy in Special Education

Sharon Smith
I learned more than I thought I would in the Financial Literacy Course.  Some of what I learned will benefit me in my personal life but I also learned how important it is for our young children to learn the value of money from a very young age.  I enjoy working in Special Education, especially with elementary aged children and I think even though I am not a full time teacher but rather a substitute teacher, I can still incorporate some of what I learned in the classrooms I'm in.  Money comes up in conversation with all ages.  I feel I can incorporate in conversation what I've learned in this course about the value of money, the difference between needing something and wanting something and also about how important our choices are when it comes to spending and saving our money.  These skills are important for students of every age and ability level.
