Financial Literacy in an At-Risk Setting

I am a teacher in our At-Risk program and I had the privilege of teaching a Financial Literacy class last fall.  Most of the students said that was the best class they ever had (because it was "stuff they were REALLY going to use") There was a budget simulation that I used with the students toward the end of class and it was quite successful and engaging to the students.  I think when I teach the class again, however, I will use change the items in the budget to reflect their own projected expenses.  For example, they were not required to shop for a vehicle, shop for car insurance, price what groceries ACTUALLY cost, etc.  I did not get the students out into the community for the class and I think I could make it a lot more effective by doing so.
