Financial Literacy in the Classroom

Kim Nieman
I teach in a K-5 Resource. I could introduce financial literacy to my students with lessons on saving, spending, and donating. This could be as simple as taking a game like Monopoly Jr., introduce the idea of choosing a property to save for, using a recording sheet to record possible expenses (purchased properties of others) and then later introduce donating; cover some of the properties with donations to non-profit organizations. These could also be part of the "Community Chest" cards, if they aren't already.

In my experience, financial literacy has been taught more at the middle/high school level than the elementary level. I'm excited to learn how I can teach it to my students.
