Financial Literacy in the Classroom

Meagan Belieu
I am a Family Consumer Science teacher working with 6th and 7th grade students. I do a budgeting project with my students that has them act as high school seniors that choose their college, and go on to learn all about a career path for a job that will be in high demand once they are ready to graduate. They earn the median annual salary for their position and they are tasked with finding housing, choosing a roommate, to rent or own the home, what kind and if they will get a car, pay utilities and other expenses and learn how to save.

This project has been great because kids don't really think about this stuff or really even realize that their parents are doing these things for them every day. The project is always a favorite amongst my kids they like to imagine their lives moving forward and I think that helps them learn the content.
