Financial Literacy in the Content Area

Lora Duffy-Danker
My role is to primarily support 10-12 grade students identified for the gifted and talented program. I serve 170 identified students.

Most of the time in my role I advise students and serve as an advocate or liaison. I also provide recommendations and help with scholarships. I serve as a resource to teachers to help meet student needs.

That said, I am always looking for opportunities to match students with experiences to stretch their thinking. I create curricular units that I offer to students to augment their learning. In the past five years I've created a cyber defense group that learns best-practice methods to protect computer systems.

It has been my observation that students often have conversations about what they want to purchase or already have, saving for college, and getting or keeping a job.  With both cyber defense and personal student needs in mind, I thought this financial literacy course was a perfect fit for me as a learning vehicle to then develop more student opportunity in the area of learning personal finance and security.

To embed financial literacy from this course into work I do with students, I've created a website with various areas that deal with having money, needing money and resources. I've offered this opportunity to a small student group I work with in cyber defense and I have five students who have volunteered to pilot this work. Three have been more active than the other two.

This fall, as one of my options to broaden student experiences I'll offer my "GT Financial Literacy" opportunity to students as an area of study they may want to try. I'll be interested to collect more data regarding their experiences to help improve this curricular option.
