Financial Literacy

Laurie Schafer
I work at a library and this summer I have many programs planned for elementary age students.  One of my programs is making food in a mug.  Last week we made Mac n Cheese in a mug.  One of the participants commented they had just made Mac n Cheese for lunch but had purchased the Mac n Cheese ($1.29) at the store.  I told the students that I had purchased a bag of pasta from the store for $1.00.  We had seven participants in the room at the time.  I was able to compare the price to my bag of pasta to her one bowl she had purchased.  It was a good learning experience for them to see the difference.

I did not have any idea about money in my elementary years, other than 1 cent tootsies at the local hardware store.  I am hoping I can incorporate what I learn in this class with the programs I am doing at our library with elementary age children.
