Financial Literacy

Brenda Curtis
I currently substitute, but I am working with young adults trying to become ready for the outside world.  One of the things that I am having them do, is plan a budget.  I have them write down their gross pay and show them how to use tax tables to calculate their take home pay.  I have figure out what percent should be used for rent, food, savings, emergency funds, and other necessities. With what is left over, I explain that can be used for wants - eating out or a movie.  One of them has even decided to put extra into savings if it is left at the end of the month to be able to make a bigger planned purchase later.

I think the idea of using play money would help to visual the amount of money better than just seeing the numbers as at times, the written budget seems overwhelming.  A combination of writing the budget out with a visual may actually work the best.
