Being a member of the school band often means extra expenses for the student or family. As a band director, I need to help students (especially beginners) to understand the value of their instruments and sheet music and how to properly take care of them. This is a lesson that will serve them well for the rest of their lives - understanding the value of the things you have and how to take care of them so they last. Too many students have a throw-away mindset because they think they will just buy something new. This is not always financially (or environmentally) friendly.
Sometimes older students are asked to perform for functions in the community or at their church and are sometimes paid for their musical performances. Students would benefit from knowing how to prioritize their spending and saving and incorporate payment from these occasional performances into their budget.
