Financial Literacy

Bethany Manning
In the past I have taught basic financial literacy to both Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in a residential setting and to  middle school/high school students and adult English Language learners.  I have started with necessary vocabulary.  My deaf and hard of hearing students spent quite a bit of time buying things in the classroom, counting out money owed and counting back money to the "customer."  As a culmination to the lesson we walked over to a local fast food business...always a treat for kids who were attending a residential school ...The students individually ordered the meals that they wanted, paid when asked and counted their change to make sure that they had been given back the correct amount.

That is good that you have had them count back money.  I in the past sponsored concussion stand at games for 13 years.  It was amazing the number of student could not make change and had no clue how to count back change.  I like it when i am at the store and the clerk ACTUALLY counts back change owed to me
