Financial Literacy

Diana Frisbie
I am an elementary school counselor.  Although I probably would not have the opportunity to directly teach a classroom lesson about financial literacy, I address this topic some with our older students, and to a greater extent with families.  I work in a school comprised of a student population of over 75% FRL.  Our families have many needs, including challenges related to living in poverty.  Many of our families have been in generational poverty and have not learned good strategies for managing money.  A significant number of our families are refugees from other countries.  We get frequent requests for help with these needs.  Rather than enabling the families, our first priority is to try to empower them to access the resources they need and to teach them to be financially responsible to try to overcome some of the challenges.  This topic of financial literacy is something that I can share on an ongoing basis both formally and informally as I connect with families in our school community.
