Financial Literacy

David A. Russell
I teach math classes at the High school level plus I have six adult children and seven grandchildren. Even though I teach math now when I first got married and started having children of my own even though good in math in high school it never prepared me for the real world. My wife and I went into business for ourselves at the age of 21 years old. We made lots of mistakes as we owned and operated an automotive repair business for twenty years before I started teaching 20 years ago. I taught tech Ed (industrial tech classes for the first 19 years and math classes for 1 year). I have tried to incorporate different aspects of financial literacy into my lessons when teaching tech ed and now teaching Math classes I include real life examples of math usage in my lessons. In fact I have learned things over the last twenty years that I wish I would have known when I first graduated from High school. I feel financial skills are important lessons that should be taught in a wide variety of classes. The skills can help them throughout their adult lives.
