Financial Literacy

Michelle Harwood
I deal with At Risk high school students. I speak to students everyday about what they are planning on doing with their paychecks. When I hear them say they are "going to the mall" to spend their check, I have a conversation with them and remind them of their future plans, especially seniors heading to college. I don't discourage them of "going to the mall" but I suggest putting a limit on how much they spend on themselves and encourage them to save the rest. I remind them of any bills they have to pay (cell phone, gas for their car, insurance, etc) also. I tell them paying into their savings accounts should always be their first priority. Paying their bills should be second priority. Them having fun at the mall should be their next priority.
