Forum Post 2: Readings from Assignment #3

slinke
I really enjoyed these articles, particularly the research in the third article. Although the findings were within a small area, "the arts contributed to analytically deeper, experientially broader, and psychologically more rewarding learning". As an elementary teacher, we are always searching for ways to further engage our students. Direct art integration is a researched-based method to do so. In Vermont, 3rd graders on the NECAP went from 17% proficient to 66% after art integration.

The first article discusses the crippling effect No Child Left Behind has left on education, but specifically on the damper of the recognition of multiple intelligence.

Kids are lacking the opportunity to create in any capacity, replaced with extra rigor. In theory, this should help but in context, it has shown time and time again that it is not "helping" our students learn or be more engaged in any lesson. The second article states part of the problem is an "ingrained industrial method of education people have a hard time letting go of".

I am interested in digging more into how I can integrate art further in my own classroom.
