Forum Post 5: Discussion for Assignment #9

Candice Wake
What can exploring art do for enhancing and developing career skills?
Instilling artistic skills into our students will enable them to thinking more creatively throughout their school years and beyond. It may be an avenue in which to engage students and allow them to demonstrate understanding in a different way. If they are able to understand content, it will follow them into areas outside of school.

What types of technologies have you used that shares a link with art? Include at least one link to a technology that could be used in the classroom.
I have used the iPad often to allow access to the general education curriculum for my students with significant disabilities when it comes to both art and music. I use various music apps where the student has to make music using a piano keyboard or other instruments. This works for the particular student because he loves music. He is even involved in music therapy.
When looking at websites that offered technology with arts connections, I found Toy Theater.

Although this site has many games from all academic subjects, the one that caught my eye that I could use in my classroom was Build. I liked how it hit all the components of STEAM. It is a virtual building block activity where you can build an unlimited amount of things like a doll, a truck, or a house. Students can even use 3D printers once their design is complete.

What are your "takeaways" from the article and videos?
The thing I keep getting out of all the videos I have watched throughout this course and from the readings, is the importance of the arts, particularly on students with disabilities. The arts give students an alternate way to demonstrate their knowledge. I am excited to develop lessons going forward that incorporate the arts. I am going to be more aware of what the arts teachers are doing in their classroom and try to make the connection to my classroom.
