As a substitute teacher, I don't have the access to the student's email addresses, but it has been a powerful tool that allows teachers to send me their lesson plans, materials, links, etc. Many of the teachers I've subbed for on a regular basis will email their students with links to Google Docs (for both individual and group assignments), Google Slides, Youtube videos or "reminders" to keep on task.
