I use gmail to communicate with students when they are absent, either directly with the student or the parent(s). I attach any homework or information they will need, which saves me time since I don't need to take things to the office for pick up. I also started encouraging students to use the tasks portion of their email. Some use this as a reminder of when assignments/projects are due.
