Gmail in the classroom

Melissa Harmeyer
All of my students have gmail accounts. Any time we do a formal written assignment, I have them write this in a google document. They then share this with me through gmail. I organize what they send me by using the files and folders option. For example, I might create a folder titled "Unit 2 Persuasive Essay" and within that folder, I will create subfolders labeled: Period 1, Period, 2, etc. This helps me stay organized and it allows me to cut down on paper used in the classroom. Additionally, as long as I have internet access, I can grade where ever I would like, without having to lug around a ton of papers. Also, it forces my students to stay on track because everything is time-stamped, there are no disputes about when or if an assignment was submitted. I did not really use gmail as a way to have students submit assignments before this school year, but I find it to be very user friendly and easy.
