In a classroom Gmail would be very helpful in several ways. One would be to maintain organization between different sets of classes. You could Label a folder for each period / class and keep all info separated. Along these same lines it would be helpful to Group contacts according to class/period and be able to send out a mass message if needed.
Gmail would also allow you to communicate with others if you were collaborating on projects.
