Google Sheets and Forms with Students

Ralph Hughes
Google Sheets and Forms are excellent tools for developing surveys for students and staff alike while easily gathering the data from the survey.  I will use the Forms for surveys in the future with my building staff to seek input for our BSAT Committee endeavors.  With students surveys can be helpful for the development classroom rules and routines at the beginning of the school year to build student buy in as they have some stake in the classroom procedures.

There are many ways to use Sheets and Forms with students, but I like the students using them for experiments to compare data within science classes.  The flipped classroom opportunities are huge with these two applications and something I would like to try in the very near future.  I like the fact that you can embed it in a site and share activities in a URL of a published form.

I like to use google forms to give a pre-assessment before starting a unit of study. I send the assessment to the students in their school emails. Then students take the assessment and the results are automatically tallied. This makes is super easy to do data studies and item analysis over the tested skills and to help drive instruction based on gaps individual students may be showing based on their pre-assessment.
