Hello - Sharon Seaton

Sharon Seaton
Hello,

My name is Sharon Seaton and I am the science teacher at Black Butte High School in Rock Springs Wyoming.  I am an Iowa native and taught there for 19 years, most recently in Ottumwa Community Schools before moving here in August of 2014.

Black Butte HS is the alternative school for Sweetwater School District #1. It has 92 students at the moment grades 9-12.  We have a very diverse student body not in ethnic diversity but in ability.  We have kids who are gifted and kids who have an IEP.  I am the only science teacher.  It can be a curse and a blessing  :)

I currently teach 14 different science classes using the Learning Management System Moodle.  I plan to have as many as 20 available for my students by 2019.

I am choosing this group as these are the kids I teach on a daily basis.  I am looking for ideas and ways to further my teaching methods to help these kids to be successful.

looking forward to meeting you all!

Wow Sharon!  You have your hands full with 14 different science classes.  With just 92 students total in the high school, I can see that you probably form closer relationships with students since class sizes are most likely smaller.  Being the only science teachers, I could see that having a personal learning network would be pretty important.  What are some resources you use to facilitate that?

Hello Mary,

I have been on Twitter since 2009 and this is the biggest pat of my PLC. I also keep in touch with the Iowa AEA folks in Ottumwa.  Here in Wyoming I now am involved in the new standards implementation and that has led to meeting new people from across the state.  Schools here are so far apart so google hangouts and zoom webinars are also a big part of my learning.  We measure travel in hours not minutes  :0)

I also read Edutopia, CK-12 and other educational magazines.  I also follow the Iowa Dept of Ed as well as Wyoming to get the latest information.

:)
