High School Special Ed Financial Literacy

Jennifer Maxwell
I would make an activity out of it. Have the kids draw for a job or you can have them pick a career they are planning on entering. They researchwhat the starting salary is (monthly income). They will search for a car, apartment/house, and pay bills. They will create a budget using their income. Kids will have to decide what is most important to them, and what they may have to live without because they can't afford it. Student will have a checking account and will write checks to pay bills and keep a journal. Students will take a percentage of their paycheck and put it into a sayings account in case of unexpected expenses. During the activity students will draw for a challenge they have to face. Life is not perfect. This activity would last 3-5 days, so that kids can have a couple of "pay days."
This activity will teach students basic day to day accounting skills that they will need to manage their money.
