Inappropriate Use Digital Media

Lisa Dupuy
I have had many students who communicate a lot more either on their phone through text messages or even on Facebook. This can cause issues with the students because if they are having an issue with a student at school it continues at home through texting or social media. I had one student who was having an argument with another student. They kept arguing back and forth online mostly. Eventually the students did get into a physical argument. Both of the students got suspended for multiple days. Being able to continue bullying outside of school can elevate situations. I feel that some students have a more difficult time controlling their actions and emotions because once you put any type of comment online for anyone to see it just elevates the situation. A lot of students I feel like result to physical disputes rather than trying to talk to someone face to face.

We have seen multiple physical fights occur that stem from an issue that began online.  Many students send messages, post photos, and engage in hurtful banter outside of school, and then bring those feelings and issues into the building each morning.  So often, teachers are caught off-guard when physical altercations happen because there have been no apparent issues or struggles between students at school.
