Inappropriate Use of Technology

Stephanie Mugge
I have always taken pride in my reputation and maintained a high level of professionalism online and in real life.  As a teacher and as I parent I am well aware that I am regarded as a role model with my not only my words but actions as well.
While I have not been a victim or cyber bullying or other inappropriate uses of technology myself, I do recall a time when one of my students had a lapse in judgment and sent a semi-inappropriate picture of himself to his girlfriend.  When their relationship failed, she made this photo of him public so as to embarrass or shame him.  Our administration handle the situation very delicately and appropriately.  We used this as time to discuss online behavior and our guidance department helped to provide curriculum and lessons to share in our homerooms.

The way some people respond on social media is amazing.  The instant submit or send is hit all bets are off for how the message will be received or the impact that it can have.  In the case of the boyfriend/girlfriend these situations are far too common.  It is fast and efficient way to ruin a person.
