Inappropriate Use

Casey N. Pelzer
I read a few posts about having students or children using digital media for an inappropriate amount of time. Both of my daughters would stare at the ipad or laptop at home for hours if they were allowed. They love watching youtube and my wife and I are always carefully monitoring what they are watching and for how long. I think too often we neglect to consider the amount of time spent as inappropriate.
In addition, I received a text message from an unknown number which said, "If I were a car door, I'd slam you all night". Ironically, I was teaching driver's education at the time and felt this had some type of innuendo. I notified my administrator and a discussion took place between the administrator and the student whom sent it. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable and after the student was discovered, I know embarrassment and regret set in for her as well. It was a learning lesson for all.

Responsibility as a parent and as an instructor.  What a great example.  I would have done the same but in the back of my mind I would have been thinking did I read the message correctly!  Did I interpret it differently?  This is why I always have the students and even myself reread the typed word.  I've been caught a few times and this is again a reason to reread the message.  And  this may show that the typed word is something that is easier to do than face to face.  Makes a person bold.
