Inappropriate Use

Marta Paukert
Working with high school students, this seems to happen more often than one would like to admit. Girls send inappropriate pictures to boys that they like. Boys send inappropriate pictures of themselves to girls who they want to "hook up" with at some point and time. What happens is that these type of pictures get spread around to others without the permission of those who are in the picture. Many times this is done out of revenge or to brag about it to others. I am always amazed by those involved are confused as to how the picture got out to others or they deny sending the picture to start with.

It is hard to look at these young adults in the eye. You can see all the hurt to those that I would consider the victim in the situation. It is even worse to look in the eyes of those who are sending out the picture. They really do not care about the damage they are doing to others. This is a very tight rope to walk. You inform parents and police plus talk to all the students involved.

I believe that student need to be taught about the impacts their actions have on themselves and others. Unfortunately, this is going to fall on school and teachers because not all adults know what to act appropriately online.
