Inappropriate Use

Casey Anderson
Being a younger teacher, and going through college during the beginning of the Facebook and Twitter eras, I feel like I am very aware of my own actions--particularly related to my job--on social media.  This didn't happen automatically.  Going through some situations in college classes and in mock interviews taught me a lot about social media, as did some experiences at my summer job.  My school district has set some expectations that help teachers stay away from potentially messy situations.

Like speaking to a crowd, it's important to consider bigger implications when using social and digital media.  Borrowing from our school, I think back to three guidelines that we talk about with our own students: is it true? Is it necessary? Is it hurtful?  If the answer to any of those questions is no, or even could possibly be no, it can stop a tough situation before it starts.
