Inappropriate use of digital media

Lisa Brown Darville
I always try to be a responsible user.  There have been a couple occasions when I foolishly got drawn into an online argument and as someone else mentioned, I felt just as angry and upset as I would've in a face to face altercation.

I always think of our youth as being digital natives and the older adult generation as digital immigrants.  Our young people have grown up in this digital age and often, their knowledge of apps, websites and useage surpasses our own.  I think that can be a stumbling block for us as educators; lack of knowledge and use of many of the digital applications our students are fluent in.

I know I had a rude awakening as a new facebook user when I discovered my ex husband, out of the picture for many years and who was only allowed protected and supervised visits with my son, had downloaded and saved pictures of my son, posting them to his pages.  It scared me to death.  I got a crash course from my daughter on privacy settings and security.  But I felt almost violated by it as he wasn't a facebook "friend" so he had accessed my photos through a mutual friend, I'm guessing.
