Internet Safety

Michael Lovan
Using Facebook's privacy settings, I think the most important feature would be the media platform's ability to set your own profile to completely private. I suggest this with an abundance of caution, because despite privatizing your profile, any friends you have are still free to share your content to the Facebook public. This can still compromise your privacy, so it is still quite important to be aware of what you are sharing.

The post tagging notification is also an option I would recommend all social media users use. With this feature, users would be able to approve a comment, photo, video, etc. posted on Facebook in which a friend has tagged you. By giving you this option, you are able to not only moderate what is mentioned about you (denying permission removes any mention of you in the post), but you can also keep your own profile clean in the process.

You are also able to prevent users of any or all levels from requesting friendships with you on Facebook. This allows you the ultimate control of who you have as friends-- after all, this only allows others to be friends with you IF YOU send the request out, rather than the other way around.

Finally, Facebook's "Message Requests" is a very useful tool in avoiding potentially harmful messages. If a users who is not friends with you messages you, Facebook hides the message automatically into a "Message Requests" folder and notifies you that there is a message. You have much more time to determine if the message is harmful or not, as you are not pressured into replying to it immediately (the message does not pop up on the Facebook page until you open the "Message Requests" folder).
