Internet Safety

Jamay Patten
What social networking site did you explore and what settings in that site should users be aware? Explore other participants thoughts to see if any of them apply to any social networking sites you or your students may be using.

I currently only belong to Facebook for social networking. I checking my privacy settings and have the majority of things private. People don't have access to any of my information, which is minimal, unless they are my "friend". I add people to my friend list only by searching and finding them. I am not searchable on facebook and people don't have the option to friend me unless I have added them first. When I was teaching, I kept getting friend requests from students and parents on my Facebook account. I personally don't feel it is professional to have either students or parents as "friends" on social media. I agree with the women who spoke on the video about the number of friends you have on your social network. It isn't necessary for me to have a thousand different followers, some of which I don't talk to consistently.  I believe the same standards should be set for students. Accounts should be set to private, parents should have access to all information, and the account should be checked continually to make sure children are safe and making appropriate decisions online.
