Something Newly learned:
<br/>Reading the the few pages in the book and watching videos, I have been doing extra research on how to teach this concept without stepping on toes or offending parents or students. I think that possibly a letter/email needs to go out to parents (checked by the principal/superintendent) that posts the Iowa Standards and what needs to be covered in the unit so that parents feel comfortable and prepared for what will be taught to their children.
<br/><br/>Something known:
<br/>That evolution is an ongoing science and that natural selection acts on organisms so that they can survive the change. This is not a quick process but it is an important process that occurs in nature.
<br/><br/>Student Preconceptions:
<br/>After reading online articles, most of them read that this is a concept that is not taught in school because of religious or cultural objectives. There is a conflict with religious beliefs that cause parents not to want teachers to teach their children and that teachers don't want to offend parents/students so they just skip the unit.

I was in elementary and MS in the 70's, HS in the 80's and college in the mid 80's to 1990. Teachers skipped this chapter in science. Growing up in a small town and going to church every Sunday did not fit in studying or believing in evolution. Teachers do not want to step on toes or cause a conflict in the concept of evoultion.

I agree with you about this concept being complex. Having the students view videos, read short articles, use, look at, and build models that represent evolution. I agree about not remembering this in school. I remember teachers saying in MS and HS, "I am not teaching about evolution. I remember asking my parents about it and they would just say that God made the Earth and everything in it.

I think the students are interested in this concept. Students love fossils and and looking at what organisms used to look like. Looking at models, watching videos, posting questions and having students discuss their thoughts and reasonings as a whole group.

I thought I new this content but by assessment score says differently. I failed, I received a 11/20. The questions were similar but different. I found myself reading the questions a couple times and then crossing out ones that I new weren't a good selection and then saying, "I think it is this one." I don't think this is easy to teach. I remember 45 years ago or more that my teachers would just say to us in ALL grade levels. I am not teaching evolution; "I am not going there."
<br/><br/>I will need a lot of review with this concept prior to teaching it to students. I think that using a model of a cladogram could be helpful for this concept; at least get the kids headed in the correct direction. This can help students see what traits all organisms share etc.

Do you discuss genotype and phenotype with your students? Doing Punnett squares and discussing dominant and recessive traits was a great deal of fun. We did a great genetics project with the students and incorporated mutations. It took several days, but again my kids were so into the concept, they enjoyed every minute.

How would you go about introducing mutations to your students. This year discussing this with my 7th graders brought out non stop questions. The students enjoyed this unit and continuously asked "why" or "what would happen if..." Enjoyed our conversations in class. Mutations were hard for my students to understand. I took a couple more days on mutations just to make sure they understood the concept.

MS-LS3-1: Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes mutations) located on chromosomes may affect protein and may results in harmful, beneficial, are neutral effects to the structure nd function of the organism.
<br/><br/>SEP: Developing and using Models. Students will be asked to create model/s to show the outcome of offspring from the two parents. The students will review meiosis reproduction and how a mutation can occur when the offspring arrives. The students share the information and reflect on the model. If changes need to occur, this is when it occurs.
<br/><br/>DCI: LS3.1: Inheritance of Traits--Students will need to pay attention as teacher describes some misconceptions of this concept. Introducing this with short videos that have visuals will be helpful and assist the students to learn. Introducing and reviewing chromosomes, alleles, genes, dominant and recessive traits. Explain how mutations can occur in the reproduction of the chromosomes.
<br/><br/>CCC: Structure and Function: Watching the Bozman videos on structure and function how using visuals to assist with showing the structure of an "item" and then discuss the function or purpose of what it is used for. Using the science notebook will come in handy here. Writing down the vocabulary and having the students use pictures/images to draw the function of the vocab. This will be helpful when the students start the models of the chromosomes and the genes that appear as the phenotype.

The pictures did not open for me so I could not view them and answer the questions correctly. I enjoyed teaching this to my 7th graders this year. I will say this happened to be their favorite thing to learn about. Everyday they asked questions. I finally had to limit questions so that I could actually teach the content to the students. They were fascinated to find out about themselves.
<br/><br/>I did have a student that was adopted in my room. I spoke to the parents about what we were studying just to make sure I wouldn't offend or upset them or their child.

I wrote this in another response to a posting. A great demonstration is to show respiration and transpiration. To demonstrate respiration is to stick a plastic bag on at least two leaves and leave it for 24 hours. Water is collected in the bottom of the bag. Take a mirror and breath on it. This shows that water vapor comes out as a waste in the lungs. Kids are amazed with the demonstration of respiration.

When we studied respiration and transpiration the class and I did a demonstration with a mirror and a breath of air. Students visually saw the vapor on the mirror. We placed a plastic bag on a small branch of a tree that had a couple leaves. We went out the next day and there was "water" collected in the bag. The kids were amazed and could now picture in their mind what the two were to each type of organism.

I teacher 6,7,8 grade and 5th next year. Sixth grade does not have Ecosystems... in their curriculum standards so I went to the 7th grade standards where this is taught.
<br/><br/>I selected LS:MS2-3. Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.
<br/><br/>SEP: Developing and Using Models
<br/>Prior to having the students develop a model, the students will have already learned the process of the purpose of a model, why they are used, when they are used etc. This will be in the science notebook that they create and the students will have the information as a reference tool to look at. In the video, it is said that models allow students to grasp concepts at a deeper level of understanding. With this being true, students can be reminded of a model through questioning to jar a students memory.
<br/><br/>CCC: Energy and Matter
<br/>Students have learned about matter energy in 5th grade and know they will expand on prior knowledge so they will be able to demonstrate what they know. The students will demonstrate the energy period where all energy begins with producers/autotrophs. The students will then demonstrate how primary consumers eat the producers, then to secondary consumers, and finally end with the tertiary consumers. The students will explain how the decomposers/detritivores fit in the energy pyramid and the food chain and food web of an ecosystem.
<br/><br/>DCI: Cycle of Matter and Energy Transfer in Ecosystems
<br/>There are many different cycles of matter and energy in an ecosystem. First there is the water cycle, the nitrogen cycle, potassium cycle and the carbon cycle. Each of these play a very important role in the ecosystems and everything interacts with the abiotic and biotic items. Energy is also exchanged in the energy pyramid. Each level from the producers to the top tertiary consumers only gains 10% of the prior level before it.
<br/>
